Message from the Principal – Issue 1

Message from the Principal – Issue 1

God, Father of us all,
we are beginning a new year together in our school.
Help us to learn new things this year and to make new friends.
May we open our minds to learn more about you.
May we open our hearts to the need of others.
May we have a welcoming word for those who are new or who need a friend.
Help us to learn new ways to serve you in love. Amen

Welcome to St Luke’s School for the 2019 school year! I hope that you have all enjoyed the joy and sharing of Christmas and New Year and holiday celebrations, as well as the opportunity for more family time together, and are feeling re-energised and refreshed, ready for the year ahead of us.

We are very happy to welcome to our school team Miss Louisa Byass – Year One White, Mrs Meagen Horne – Year Two Blue, Mr Justin Miller – Year Three Blue, Mr Justin Kirry – Year Five White, Mr Steven Spencer – Year Six White and from Term Two our Assistant Principal, Mrs Maura Killalea who is currently on long service leave. All our new staff come to St Luke’s with a wealth of teaching experience, enthusiasm and special talents. We are very blessed to have them on our team and I’m sure you’ll enjoy getting to know them all!

I extend also a very special welcome to the children and families who are new to our St Luke’s community. I know you will be made to feel very welcome and part of a vibrant and flourishing school community where we are all here for the children. Our Four Year Old Kindy children have been settling in with some big yawns after lunch today since starting Monday. We welcome all our Kindy parents to our beautiful school. We also welcome from tomorrow our Three Year Old Pre-Kindy children and their parents to St Luke’s.

We pray that your journey at St Luke’s is full of faith, hope and love. It is important at the beginning of each school year to focus on our Catholic school. Catholic schools have the spiritual dimensions of Christ as the teaching centre and model for all we do. The aim of our Catholic school is to support all our people to integrate faith and life and to grow into the people Jesus intended us to be.

As we begin a new year of prayer and learning, I invite you to take some time to reflect on our school and why you have chosen to be here to share your journey with us all. I pray for God’s Blessing on all of our children, our staff and our community.

The Parent Information Meetings for students in years K-6 will take place this Monday, 11 February starting at 6.30pm. I will start with a short address for all families at 6.30pm in the hall for 15min and then all classes will have parent teacher meetings from 6.45pm-7.20pm. Teachers will repeat their meetings starting at 7.25pm and finishing at 8.00pm. These sessions really help to support an informed community and also support our students, your children, in their learning during the year. If you are unable to attend, please organise a time to meet with your child’s teacher to learn of the procedures and expectations for this year.

School Improvements
Over the holidays new carpet was installed in the Telethon Speech and Hearing Outpost, an air conditioner was installed in the Learning Support room, garden beds were setup around the school and nature play equipment is continuing to be installed in the Adventure Playground, Kindy, Pre Primary and the Bush Grove. This will be completed by 25 February. Thank you again to the P&F for allocating money for the air conditioner and playgrounds. I wish to thank Kevin Stewart from Allied Air for donating the cost of the air conditioner. This was a wonderful gesture on Kevin’s behalf!

Thank you to Mrs Main and Mr Spencer for organising our first Whole School Mass this morning. The Year Six children read reverently and everyone sang the hymns well. It was a beautiful Mass and a great way to share in the Eucharist for the start of the year. The Student Leader badges were blessed by our new Parish Priest Father Stephen and he also commissioned new and current staff, as we start a new school year together.

This Friday at assembly we will present our Student Leaders with their badges. There will be NO merit awards at this assembly.

Thought for the Week
The world is a great mirror.
It reflects back to you what you are.
If you are loving, if you are friendly, if you are helpful to you.
The world is what you are.

SUSTAINABILITY NEWS

• WasteWise Grant – At the end of last year we applied for a $2200 grant from the Waste Wise Authority to reduce waste in our school and    we were successful in our application. Courtesy of the grant we were able to purchase 8 garden beds, 7cubic metres of soil, class sets of gardening gloves, 4 composters, compost turners, class sets of trowels and watering cans. This has meant that there has been a lot of gardening happening around the school this week. A special thank you to Mr Michael & Mrs Jill Pollard, Mrs Alison Spencer, Mrs Joanne Fieldhouse and Mr Aaron Main for all their hard work they put in over the holidays to get these ready for our children. This project was funded by the Waste Authority through the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Account. More information can be found at:                        http://www.wasteauthority.wa.gov.au/
• Organic Waste – We are now able to compost the 2,200kg of organic waste we produce each year and use this on our gardens. Starting    from next week, the regular blue bins will be removed from the eating areas and replaced by a green organic waste bin.                                  We collected 66,000 pieces of plastic last year. To reduce what is going into landfill from our bins, the students will now be asked to place any plastic back into their lunchboxes to take home. Here is a great clip on composting for kids:                              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRXNo7Ieky8
• Recycling – We collected 12kg of batteries in Term 4. The recycling bins (batteries and aluminium cans/ring pulls) have now moved to        outside the Science Room (next to Kindy). Please keep the donations coming.
