Teaching and Learning: Academics
Gifted and Talented Education

It is our goal at St Luke’s is to cater for the individual needs of all students. This includes students that are performing above the expected level. We are proud of the rich learning experiences we offer all students and the wide opportunities that our learning programs provide. To cater for our many highly able students we offer extensive opportunities to them to be engaged, challenged and extended in their learning.

As well as our differentiated classroom practices, we have a dedicated specialised extension programme (SHINE) for students from Year 4-6.

Academic Objectives for Shine

  • Promote critical thinking and reasoning abilities.

  • Develop and expand thinking skills.

  • Utilise differentiated strategies for learning.

  • Build or extend cognitive language skills.

  • Facilitate opportunities for learning.

St Luke’s also provide opportunities for our students to participate in a wide range of competitions and events that challenge and inspire them.

They include the following enrichment programs:

Have Sum Fun Online – Our high achieving Year 3 to 6 students participate in this problem-solving competition and compete against the greatest young mathematicians in Australia.

Minecraft Coding Club – The Minecraft coding club is open to students in Years 4 to 6 to develop their coding skills.

UNSW ICAS – Students from Year 2 to 6 take part in these tests to challenge and measure themselves against students from across Australia.

St Luke’s Gifted and Talented Program strongly connects with the community, particularly with community radio.

Our students have the exciting opportunity to host a radio segment with John Logan from his ‘School of Thought’ program at 89.7FM, which is recorded and broadcasted from ECU Joondalup, and Curtin FM’s program. We welcome you to like and share their Facebook Page or subscribe to the School of Thought podcast.
